The Pivotal Role of ICTs in Addressing Egypt Challenges: H.E. Amr Talaat
06 November 2018 - Artikel
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can play a pivotal role in addressing Egypt’s challenges in the areas of poverty, education, and health, says His Excellency (H.E.) Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology (ICT), Egypt.
In a video interview at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 29 October to 16 November 2018, Mr Talaat described the key role of ICTs in helping his government achieve their vision.
Talaat explained that the Egyptian government is undertaking several projects focused on ICT development. He mentioned that they will launch a comprehensive health insurance project in one city next year, and are working on a fiber-to-schools project that would enable ICTs to improve the education system. He also listed other projects, including providing digital services for citizens, and training to bridge the skills gap between new graduates and the demands of the digital market.
According to Talaat, the number of households in Egypt with a computer has grown from 46% to 64% of the population and mobile penetration has reached 99.5 %. “In terms of Internet connectivity, we’re at 46% so we still have room to grow,” he added.
Egypt is currently working to improve infrastructure to enhance connectivity. “We are working seriously on fiber-to-the-home projects across the country and we’re also leveraging new technologies… in order to enhance speed and increase the number of houses connected and citizens connected,” said Talaat.
“The last competitiveness report has just been issued by the World Bank and they found that the Egypt market is number 24 out of 140 countries in the world.” he stated. “It is a very ripe and promising market with a lot of potential, so I call on investors to visit us.”
