ITU Member States Elect Mario Maniewicz as Director of ITU Radiocommunication Bureau

Member States of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have elected Mario Maniewicz as Director of ITU’s Radiocommunication Bureau (BR) during the Union’s 20th Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-18) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Mr Maniewicz, an electronics engineer specialized in telecommunications who has served in a variety of ITU management positions, will begin his role as Director of BR on 1 January 2019.

Maniewicz has served from 2014 to 2018 as Deputy Director of BR, where he supported the Director and the Membership in the vital function of global management of the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits.

Previously, Maniewicz served in a variety of management positions at the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) as well as ITU Regional Offices, where he worked closely with governments, regulators and operators to develop strategic policies and regulations to enable the modernization of the telecommunication sector in Latin American countries.

Prior to joining ITU, Maniewicz worked for Uruguay’s main telecommunications operator and as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of Uruguay’s leading university.

Electing ITU’s Other Top Leaders

The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference election process also included the posts of Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, and Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau.

These elections will be followed by elections for the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) and the ITU Council.
